Oily skin

What characterizes oily skin?

  • Oily skin becomes easily glossy and shiny (the degree varies).

  • The texture of the skin is often uneven.

  • The color of the skin may be "gusty" (may be due to reduced blood circulation to the skin).

  • Pores are often open and large, sebum accumulation and clogging of pores is common.

  • Gets pimples (acne) easily.

  • Can exfoliate coarse flakes of dandruff (sebum can stick together dead skin cells, this makes any flakes larger than for other skin types).

  • Wrinkles and lines appear later than in other skin types.

Why do you get pimples more easily when you have oily skin?

  • Oily skin often has an overproduction of sebum. Sebum softens, lubricates and protects the skin. But too much sebum makes the environment on the skin more accessible to pimples. A shiny and shiny skin indicates an overproduction of sebum. Getting control of sebum production is one of the most important treatment goals in skin care for oily skin. Other factors that can cause acne are:

  • Hormones, sebum production is regulated by, among other things, hormones (estrogen and testosterone). Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy and menstruation can therefore cause acne.

  • Stress can cause acne. Stress affects hormones, the gastrointestinal system and can increase the formation of free radicals. All of these can contribute to acne.

  • Excessive sweating can make the skin more prone to acne.

Skin care suggestions for oily skin:

  • Try to stick to one series, the products often give optimal effect when used together.

  • Cleanse the skin morning and evening. Good cleansing of the skin means that creams "apply better". Foam or jelly are cleansing products that are well suited to oily skin. Feel free to end the cleansing with the use of toner. Toner removes any remaining waste products.

  • Don't be afraid of moisture! Use a face cream for oily and impure skin, with a lot of moisture, but without oils. If your skin becomes slightly shiny during the day, you can use a day cream with mattifying ingredients. The night cream may well be a little richer than the day cream.

  • Use face peeling 1-3 times a week. Dead skin cells do not come off so easily from oily skin, as a lot of sebum "holds" dead skin cells back. Accumulation of dead skin cells can make the skin environment more favorable for acne.

  • Use a face mask 1-2 times a week.

  • Directly on pimples/impurities, you can use special products, which counteract the growth of the acne bacteria and/or dry out pimples faster. Remember that the skin is most receptive at night, so feel free to use the night for this!
