Itchy scalp

Both external and internal factors can affect our scalp and cause itchiness. An unbalanced scalp can be either too dry or too oily. Both parts can be experienced as troublesome for the individual, but neither part is dangerous.

Dry scalp

A dry scalp usually has reduced sebum production and often feels tight. Dry scalp can also cause itching as a result of low moisture. With a dry scalp, dead skin cells from the outermost skin layer come off more often than normal. This is often misinterpreted as dandruff. The difference between dandruff and dry scalp is that the flakes with dry scalp are much smaller than the flakes that occur with dandruff, and they fall more easily on the shoulders.

  • Good advice for dry scalp

  • Avoid washing your hair daily

  • Use a mild shampoo

  • Use conditioner only on the ends of the hair

  • Rinse hair thoroughly after each wash

  • Avoid frequent use of hair styling products such as hair gel, hair spray and the like

Oily scalp

An oily scalp usually has too much sebum production, which results in the hair looking greasy more quickly. A lot of sebum can also cause itching and irritation. In addition, the yeast Malassezia gets better growing conditions. Malassezia is a common fungus that most people have on the scalp, overgrowth of the fungus can cause dandruff or seborrheic eczema. Seborrheic eczema produces larger and fatter flakes than normal dandruff. Men generally have an oilier scalp than women.

Good advice for oily scalp

  1. Avoid washing your hair too frequently or too infrequently

  2. Use a mild but cleansing shampoo.

  3. Remember to shampoo your hair twice each wash

  4. Avoid using "heavy" hair styling products, such as wax.
