Itching in the abdomen

Itching in the abdomen is both bothersome and uncomfortable. It can be a symptom of diseases such as infections, allergies or skin disorders. Some causes of the itching are easy to treat, while others will be bothered by the itching for a longer time.

What is itching in the abdomen?

Itching in the abdomen in women, also called pruritus vulvae, is an itchy sensation in the area around the labia and vaginal opening. In men, the itching can occur in different areas on and around the genitals, depending on the condition.

Causes of itching in the abdomen?

  • Fungal infection.

  • Sexually transmitted diseases such as flat lice, trichomonas and chlamydia infection.

  • Genital warts

  • Allergies.

  • Local skin irritation after using products such as soaps or creams.

  • Skin diseases such as lichen sclerosus and psoriasis.

  • Hyperglycaemia in type 2 diabetes.

  • Vaginal dryness.

  • Contact eczema and allergic eczema.

  • Balanitis (inflammation of the foreskin).

  • Cancer of the external genitalia (rare).

Symptoms of itching in the abdomen

Other symptoms that can occur at the same time as itching in the abdomen:

  • Discharge.

  • Redness.

  • A burning or stinging sensation below.

Fungal infections

Infections in the lower abdomen are a common cause of itching below. Yeast infection is experienced by more than half of all women during their lifetime. In addition to itching, this will cause symptoms such as white, thick discharge and burning below. Men can also get fungal infections that can cause itching in the abdomen. Athlete's foot is most common in male athletes, overweight people and those who sweat a lot. This condition often causes itching around the entire crotch and not just on the genitals.

Over-the-counter antifungal agents such as Canesten and Pevaryl are available both as vaginal tablets and cream. If you have previously been diagnosed with a fungal infection and recognize the symptoms, this can be treated on your own. If local treatment is ineffective, Diflucan capsules can be used. Read the package insert and ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this.
