Mosquito bites

We react very differently to mosquito bites. Some people get a small dot, while others may swell up and become very red. Mosquito bites are often itchy, but disappear on their own within a couple of days.

Are some people bitten by mosquitoes more than others?

Some people feel more bothered by mosquitoes than others. Why it is this way is not completely clear, but several things play a role in what mosquitoes prefer.

  • Mosquitoes actively use their sight, and dark clothing attracts mosquitoes more than light clothing.

  • Mosquitoes use their sense of smell to the fullest and certain smells are thought to attract mosquitoes more than others. Carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes. Lactic acid also acts as an attractant - when we get hot and sweaty, the mosquitoes therefore like us extra well.

  • Animals can also be bothered by mosquitoes and bites. We offer our own fly, mosquito and tick repellent sprays for animals.

Also remember that whether you are bothered by mosquitoes or not is a subjective opinion. Some people may itch a lot, and feel very bothered by mosquito bites even if they are not necessarily stung anymore.

Prevention of mosquito bites

  • Cover as much of the skin as possible with clothing. Mosquitoes easily penetrate thin clothing.

  • Use mosquito repellent on skin areas not covered by clothing. Mosquito repellents must not be applied directly to the skin of children under 3 years of age, but can be applied to clothing.

  • Mosquito netting in front of the window may be a good idea if you sleep with the window up in areas with a lot of mosquitoes.

  • Mosquitoes are attracted to light. Avoid leaving windows or doors open when the light is on inside.

  • If you are going to a tropical region, it is very important to prevent mosquito bites, as mosquitoes in certain areas can transmit serious diseases.
