The stems are single and bare, densely covered with leaves, in the upper part of the shell. The leaves are lanceolate and bare, green to grey-green, pointed with three nerves. Inflorescences are with a small number of flowers, on longer stalks, the crown leaves are blue or purple, narrowed into a short nail. The fruit is a spherical cocoon, and the seed is ovoid, flattened and dark in color. It grows in the Mediterranean, in fields, on the edges of forests, and is also cultivated as an industrial plant.
