Pigment spots (melasma)

Pigment spots (melasma)

The sun doesn't always give you the even skin tone you want. Darker areas can sometimes appear, usually on the face. This is called pigment spots (melasma).

What are pigment spots (melasma)?

Pigment spots are darker spots or areas that can appear in the skin. There are many different forms of pigment spots, where the most common form is called melasma and are pigment spots that are often seen on skin areas that have been exposed to a lot of sun, for example the face (cheeks, forehead, temple and upper lip) and the back of the hands. As a rule, there are no problems associated with having pigment spots, other than the fact that it can be cosmetically unsightly.

Causes of pigment spots

  • Pigment spots can be caused by excessive sunbathing combined with the use of low or no sun protection.

  • Heredity and genetic factors also seem to have an effect on whether or not you get pigment spots.

  • Pigment spots can also occur due to hormones. For example, pregnant women are more prone to getting pigment spots. Pigment spots of this type usually disappear by themselves after some time, but can become permanent.

  • Certain medicines can make you more prone to pigment spots, including birth control pills and certain anti-epileptic medicines.

How to prevent pigment spots?

  • Don't forget that pigment spots can be prevented by using sunscreen! Sunscreen is important protection and the best preventive measure against pigment spots.

  • Use a high sun protection factor all year round, preferably factor 30 or higher.

  • Choose a sunscreen with high protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
