Insect stings and insect bites

Stings and bites from insects are rarely dangerous, but can be quite unpleasant. Fortunately, there is advice that can prevent and alleviate the problems.

What are insect stings and insect bites?

Some types of insects can sting or bite humans and other animals. Bites and stings from Norwegian insect species are usually not dangerous, but can still be quite annoying.

Certain insect species can carry diseases that they can infect when they bite. Examples are ticks and mosquitoes. It is still not relevant in this country.

Cause of insect stings and insect bites?

Blood-sucking insects bite humans and other living beings for their nourishment. A local allergic reaction occurs in the skin in humans due to the release of histamine when the insect bites. This reaction further leads to itching and swelling.

Examples of blood-sucking insects that bite:

  • Klegg

  • Bed bugs

  • Mosquito

  • Fleas

  • Lice

Other types of insects do not bite, but sting and inject poison via their sting. This poison can cause local swelling.

Examples of insects that sting:

  • Bumblebee

  • Wasp

  • Bee

You are most exposed to insect stings and bites in the summer. Both because there are the most insects at this time of year, but also because you tend to wear less clothing, and are more exposed with bare skin.

Mosquito bites

Mosquito bites are among the most common insect bites we get. Mosquito bites are often found on areas of the body that have not been covered by clothing. It can vary greatly between individuals how strongly one reacts to mosquito bites. Both in terms of the appearance of the bite, and how troublesome it is experienced. It is also known that there is a difference in the extent to which the individual attracts mosquitoes.

Mosquito nets and mosquito spray are good aids to avoid and limit mosquito bites.
