The sun – our best friend, but also our enemy

The sun gives us many good benefits, including energy, vitamin D and well-being, but it is also a source of some less good things.

UV rays from the sun also contribute to premature aging of the skin and sun damage that can develop into more serious conditions such as skin cancer . In connection with sun protection, we usually talk about two types of UV radiation: UVA and UVB.

• UVB rays have a shorter wavelength, turn the skin brown, but also contribute to sunburn , allergic reactions and also increase the risk of skin cancer.

• UVA rays are rays with a long wavelength that can penetrate deep into the skin. UVA rays lead to aging of the skin, can cause sun eczema and allergies, and increase the risk that skin cancer may develop at later stages in life. We are exposed to UVA rays all year round, as these penetrate both clouds and glass.

There is constant research into the sun and its harmful effects on the skin, and in recent years we have also discovered another type of radiation from the sun, namely blue light.

Blue light

Blue light is the part of visible light that has the lowest wavelengths and carries the most energy. That is why it is important to talk about high-energy blue light, often abbreviated HEV light (from English: High Energy Visible).

You may have heard of blue light in connection with PC and TV screens, but the sun is actually the biggest source of blue light. Blue light from the screen is not high energy. In contrast to the blue light from the screen, the blue light from the sun is also something we should protect our skin from, as it can contribute to sun damage.

High-energy blue light penetrates even deeper into the skin than both UVA and UVB rays, which generates free radicals and gives longer-lasting pigmentation than UVA. This contributes to premature aging of the skin, and therefore also poses a risk in relation to the development of skin cancer and other sun damage.

It is therefore very important to protect yourself from all the sun's harmful rays. Fortunately, this no longer means that you have to settle for thick creams that leave the skin white and sticky. What exactly is sun protection?

Have you ever wondered what it is about a sunscreen that makes it protect us from the sun's harmful rays? There is something we call a solar filter. There are both physical and chemical sunscreens.

Physical sun filters lay like a film over the skin and protect the skin by reflecting the sun's rays. These leave a visible white layer on the skin.

Chemical filters are filters that penetrate the skin's top layer and protect by absorbing the UV radiation, so that it does not reach the deeper layers of the skin and cause damage. These filters are invisible on the skin.

The combination of solar filters is important for a solar product to provide broad-spectrum and effective protection against the sun's harmful rays. Avène's sun series has a well-documented and effective composition of chemical filters that give you optimal protection at the cellular level, in addition to comfortable and light textures.

The sun products in the Avène sun range are all photostable, which is important to ensure that they are able to withstand the effects of the UV rays, so that the level of protection is maintained. In addition to Avène sunscreens only having four sun filters, the sun range also contains  Pre-Tocopheryl , also known as Provitamin E, which is an effective antioxidant that protects the skin against free radicals. Free radicals lead to oxidative stress, which, among other things, occurs in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Free radicals and oxidative stress can lead to cell damage. The antioxidant Provitamin E ( Pre-Tocopheryl)  effectively neutralizes free radicals and thus counteracts oxidative stress and prevents cell damage.

Avène's sun series also contains the unique Avène Thermal Spring Water, which has proven anti-irritation, soothing and softening properties on the skin. Sunscreen and the environment

Sun filters are necessary for a sunscreen to be able to protect us against the sun's harmful rays. The downside is that most solar filters are not very environmentally friendly. When you swim in the sea with sunscreen on, these sun filters end up in the sea where they are harmful to both coral reefs and other marine organisms. It is actually estimated that approx. 25,000 tonnes of solar filters end up in the sea every year. 

As of today, there are no solar filters that are completely 100% environmentally friendly. That makes it extra important that sunscreen manufacturers do what they can to minimize the impact on the environment as much as possible.

These initiatives mean that Avène has been able to enter into a partnership with PUR PROJET - an organization that works to reduce pollution and protect the ocean's coral reefs.

Through the project, Avène is helping to restore coral reefs by planting new corals and protecting the marine ecosystem. Mangrove trees are planted to minimize erosion, and Avène helps with waste management, especially plastic waste. The project takes place in Indonesia, where the local population is also trained to respect and protect the marine environment, for a long-term minimization of our impact on the marine environment.
