The causes of stomach cramps can be many. A distinction is made between acute and chronic abdominal pain. In case of acute abdominal pain, it is advised to see a doctor.

What is acute abdominal pain?

Acute abdominal pain can be described as cutting, pinching or stabbing. Pain from the chest or abdomen that comes on suddenly and has lasted less than one week is called acute abdominal pain. There are often additional symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. There are many different causes of acute abdominal pain. It is therefore recommended that you see your doctor to clarify the cause of the pain and the need for treatment.

What is chronic abdominal pain?

Chronic abdominal pain is often defined as constant or frequently recurring pain that lasts at least 2-3 months. There are many causes of abdominal pain. The most frequent causes of chronic abdominal pain are functional constipation and irritable bowel syndrome.

A doctor should also be contacted if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Weight loss

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea/vomiting

  • Changes in stool pattern

  • Bloody or mucous stools
